What is the advantage of two-phase orthodontic treatment?

Two-phase orthodontic treatment is a specialized process that combines tooth straightening and physical, facial changes. The purpose of two-phase treatment is to maximize the opportunity to accomplish the ideal healthy, functional, and aesthetic result that will remain stable throughout your child’s life.

What if treatment is put off?

Putting off treatment can result in a need for more invasive treatment later in life that may not completely fix your child’s smile. Early treatment is most effective for achieving lasting results.

Phase One

A Foundation for a Lifetime of Beautiful Smiles

The goal of Phase One treatment is to help your child’s jaw develop in a way that can accommodate all of the permanent teeth and improve how the upper and lower jaws fit together. Children often show early signs of jaw growth problems as they develop, such as an upper jaw that is too narrow or growing too much, which can be recognized at a young age. If children over the age of six are found to have this type of jaw discrepancy, they may be candidates for early orthodontic treatment with Dr. Melanie Parker at Melanie Parker Orthodontics in San Diego, and if children around age eight have crowded front teeth, early treatment can sometimes prevent the need to remove permanent teeth later.

  • Planning now can help protect your child’s smile as they grow, and early-phase treatment with Dr. Melanie Parker may reduce the need for permanent tooth extractions or jaw surgery in the future.

  • Early evaluation allows Dr. Parker to guide jaw growth, create room for crowded teeth, and address developing bite problems before they become more complex.

To determine your child’s unique treatment needs, orthodontic records are taken to help Dr. Melanie Parker understand how their teeth and jaws are developing. These records typically include models of the teeth, X-rays, and photographs, and they help determine which appliances to use, how long treatment may take, and how often visits will be needed. During your child’s initial consultation, Dr. Parker will review these records and let you know if early, Phase One treatment is recommended.

Resting Period

In this phase, the remaining permanent teeth are left alone as they erupt. Retaining devices may not be recommended if they would interfere with eruption. It is best to allow the existing permanent teeth some freedom of movement. A successful first phase will have created room for permanent teeth to find an eruption path. Otherwise, they may become impacted or severely displaced.

  • Monitoring the teeth’s progressAt the end of the first phase of treatment, the teeth are not yet in their final positions; this is planned and completed during the second phase of treatment. In some cases, selectively removing certain primary (baby) teeth during the resting phase can help permanent teeth erupt into better positions. To keep a close eye on growth and development, periodic recall appointments are scheduled—typically every six months—to monitor your child’s progress and adjust the plan as needed.

Phase Two

Stay healthy and look attractive

The goal of Phase Two treatment is to make sure each tooth has an exact position in the mouth, working in harmony with the lips, cheeks, tongue, and other teeth. When this balance is achieved, the teeth function properly and the bite feels stable and comfortable. Phase Two typically involves full upper and lower braces.

At the beginning of Phase One, orthodontic records were taken and a diagnosis and treatment plan were created to guide your child’s overall care. Appliances used during Phase One helped correct and realign the teeth and jaws in preparation for this final stage. Phase Two begins once all of the permanent teeth have erupted and usually involves braces on all the teeth for an average of about 24 months. After braces are removed, retainers are worn to help your child maintain their beautiful, healthy smile.
